Deck + Playground + Balcony
Stoop Reinstall
Penthouse Installation
We renovated this entire house in Brooklyn, NY, putting in a deck area, and redesigning the garden.
Interesting innovation in this project had to do with the space adjacent to the deck area, which was under the balcony. This became a children's playground, where adults could still view their children while enjoying a separate space.
At a building on the West Side of Manhattan in New York City, we installed a new stoop to match the original from 1867. I particularly like to preserve and / or restore the original details of a building. I feel I have achieved the goal of a project if people see the features designed are originals. To me, it's about preserving a building's "story and history."
At the same building on the West Side of Manhattan in New York City where the stoop reinstall took place, we added a penthouse. Challenging was to provide the owner with "a quiet place to read his newspaper" (his wish) and to do that in Manhattan! To ensure privacy and yet to foster an openness to the space were parts of the challenge. In the end, the owner got what he wanted ~ and loved it! Also added a solar collector on the roof to offset electricity ~ which fits in with our emphasis on green design.
